By Breaking Belize News Staff: The San Ignacio and Santa Elena communities are voicing their disappointment after the recent St. George’s Caye Day parade, citing concerns over the participation of certain “dance groups.”
Photos and videos of underage girls performing in the parade have circulated widely on social media, prompting a wave of criticism from Belizeans.
Many community members are urging parents and schools to reinforce appropriate conduct and guidelines for such events.
Comments on social media reflect the concern: “Parents it’s up to us, to guide and educate our children, the world out there is not an easy one and will destroy them if they are not ready,” and “I remember when I was growing up those were called parade. Nowadays it’s so sad to see kids, doing the so-called dance, wish the parade was like before. That’s the reason y I don’t go out and see the parade.”
Some parents have criticized those who allowed the underage girls to participate in these performances, while others are calling on schools to take a more active role in addressing these concerns.
There is also a call for dance groups and their leaders to address this recurring issue, which has been a point of contention during parades in previous years.
Community leaders are advocating for a return to traditional displays of patriotism, emphasizing the importance of cultural attire, cultural presentations, and civic pride.
