Belizean child denied access to education due to withheld birth records

By Horace Palacio: A four-year-old child in Belize City has been denied access to school registration because the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) is withholding birth records over an unpaid $500 hospital bill, according to a concerned relative.

The issue has drawn criticism from advocates who say it highlights the ongoing marginalization of low-income families. The withholding of birth records, which are essential for school enrollment, is preventing the child from accessing education.

“I recall this issue being discussed some years ago, and there was an agreement that birth records could not be withheld for non-payment of hospital bills,” said the family member, who wished to remain anonymous.

The incident raises questions about Belize’s commitment to achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 5, which focuses on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Advocates argue that denying birth records and education undermines efforts to uplift marginalized communities.

“We as a country cannot say we are working toward these goals when we are still withholding opportunities for advancement from our girls,” the relative added.

Officials from KHMH were not immediately available for comment.
