UDP calls for investigation into death of Daniel Cal

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement calling for an “immediate and comprehensive investigation into the death of Daniel Cal whilst in Police Custody.”

The UDP says that the incident raises serious questions about the treatment of persons in police detention.

“It brings into sharp focus the conduct of law enforcement personnel when treating detained persons.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Daniel’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. It is imperative that we seek justice not only for Daniel but also for those persons who might fall victims of similar circumstances,” the UDP said.

The UDP also demanded that swift action be taken against all those persons found to be involved in this tragic incident.

“We additionally call for the investigation to be conducted by a team not attached to the Belmopan Police Formation. The public deserves to know the truth, as we seek to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future,” the UDP added.

The UDP says that it urges the Government to take immediate action to address this situation and to implement necessary reforms within the Belize Police Department to prevent further tragedies.
