By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) restarted with a thrilling encounter on Saturday, September 14, 2024, as the San Pedro Pirates secured a narrow but significant 1-0 victory over the reigning champions, Port Layola FC, at Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.
The decisive moment came early in the game when Andres Makin found the back of the net in the 9th minute, giving the San Pedro Pirates an early lead. Despite numerous attempts by Port Layola to equalize, the Pirates’ defense held firm, ensuring that Makin’s goal was enough to clinch the win.
This victory propelled the San Pedro Pirates to nine points, putting them on par with Verdes FC, who are set to play against Wagiya SC on Sunday. The champions, Port Layola, missed an opportunity to extend their second-place standing of 10 points and now face the possibility of dropping in the rankings should Verdes win over their southern nemesis.
The Pirates’ triumph was a testament to their home advantage and strong performance, while Port Layola will need to regroup and strategize to maintain their position in the league. The current standings see Progresso leading with 14 points, followed by Port Layola with 10 points, Verdes FC and San Pedro Pirates both with 9 points, Bandits with 4 points, and Wagiya with 1 point.
