By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a superb Premier League of Belize (PLB) encounter, the Belmopan Bandits managed to pull off a surprising 1-1 draw against league leaders Progresso FC at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan on Saturday night, September 14, 2024.
The match saw Bandits take the lead in the 70th minute with a goal from Jermaine Westby. However, Progresso, determined to maintain their unbeaten record, fought back and equalized in the 89th minute through Alden Nunez.
Despite their efforts, Progresso couldn’t secure a win, marking their second consecutive draw after being halted by San Pedro Pirates at the end of the first round.
For the Bandits, this draw signifies a positive trend as they have now gone two successive games without a loss. They remain in fifth place but have increased their points tally to four, three points ahead of Wagiya SC, who are set to face Verdes FC on Sunday.
Progresso, while still unbeaten, only managed to extend their lead at the top of the standings by one point, now sitting at 14 points. This stumble in Belmopan allows other teams to close the gap, making the race for the top spot even more competitive.
