International News: Florida Governor DeSantis launches State Investigation into Trump assassination attempt

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Today, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a state investigation into the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club.

According to ABC News, DeSantis signed an executive order directing the Office of Statewide Prosecutor, led by Attorney General Ashley Moody, to oversee the investigation.

DeSantis expressed skepticism about the federal government’s ability to handle the investigation, citing concerns about its impartiality given ongoing federal cases against Trump. He emphasized the need for state oversight on this serious offense, which could result in a life sentence if convicted.

The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested after allegedly attempting to target Trump on Sunday.

Routh, a convicted felon, faces federal charges for illegal firearm possession.

The FBI is leading the federal investigation, and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland affirmed that the Justice Department will fully support local and state law enforcement in the inquiry.

DeSantis’ move comes amidst criticism of federal agencies’ handling of similar incidents, including a July attack where a suspect was killed by Secret Service after shooting at Trump from a distance.

Trump has publicly commended the Secret Service’s response to the recent threat.
