By Aaron Humes: The highly anticipated arraignment of Elmer Nah, the former police officer charged with three counts of murder in the New Year’s Eve triple homicide case in Belmopan, was adjourned today in the High Court. The case, scheduled to commence before Justice Nigel Pilgrim, encountered technicalities that necessitated the adjournment to September 26.
Nah, who maintains his innocence, was represented by a team of esteemed attorneys including Richard “Dickie” Bradley, Godfrey Smith, and Lynden Jones. The court session began with Nah’s arrival under heavy security and took an unexpected turn when the court door was closed, barring the court reporter and some relatives of the Ramnarace family from entering. Although it was believed that the proceedings were held in camera, it was later clarified that the judge had not ordered the closure of the court door.
Inside the courtroom, only one of Nah’s attorneys, Lynden Jones, appeared in person, while the others, including the Special Prosecutor assigned to the case, Terrence Williams, appeared virtually. Justice Pilgrim brought to the parties’ attention that the indictment for five counts, including three murder charges, one attempted murder charge, and one charge of using deadly means of harm, was not properly before the court.
The misjoinder of the charges led to the prosecutor requesting time to rectify the indictment. Nah is charged with three counts of murder related to the tragic deaths of Jon Ramnarace, David Ramnarace, and Vivian Ramnarace, as well as one count of attempted murder and one count of using deadly means of harm upon Yemi Alberto.
