By Aaron Humes: A Belize City man who got into a misunderstanding outside of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court is home awaiting trial after being granted bail for the offenses of aggravated assault upon a police officer and damage to property.
But at his arraignment, 28-year-old Armando Martin Esquilliano, a Construction Worker of K Street, Kings Park, claimed it was the officer who was aggressive towards him.
Allegations are that on Wednesday, September 4, on Coney Drive outside of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, he committed an aggravated assault upon Police Constable Roderick Williams. It is further alleged that he caused damages to the officer’s $600 Michael Kors watch and his $45 police uniform shirt.
Esquilliano was prepared to plead guilty but he explained that he had placed his foot at the edge of the bench outside the courtroom and the officer approached him and asked him what was the problem. According to Esquilliano he and the officer got into a struggle and by mistake he caught him with his foot.
The court entered a plea of not guilty and offered him bail with conditions. Those conditions are that he is not to have any direct contact with the virtual complainant who is a police officer posted at the entrance of the court’s main door; and he is not to be charged with any similar offenses whilst out on bail, or his bail could be revoked.
