U.S. Secretary of State hails U.S.-Belize partnership on Independence Day

By Horace Palacio: U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken extended heartfelt congratulations to the people of Belize today in recognition of the 43rd anniversary of our independence. Blinken’s statement not only honored Belize’s sovereignty but also underscored the growing partnership between Belize and the United States.

In his address, Blinken praised our enduring democratic values and the shared commitment between both countries to the rule of law and human rights. “Our values-based partnership is exemplified in our joint work, from migration management to climate change efforts,” Blinken noted.

Belize has emerged as a regional leader in humane migration management, supported by the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, and continues to take the lead in addressing transnational crime and environmental challenges. Blinken also highlighted Belize’s role as President Pro Tempore of the Regional Conference on Migration, further demonstrating our commitment to progress in the region.

A key highlight of the U.S.-Belize partnership is the $125 million Millennium Challenge Corporation Belize Compact, signed earlier this year. This initiative is designed to promote sustainable and responsible economic development, ensuring that future generations of Belizeans benefit from a safer and more secure future.

As we celebrate this milestone, Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to continue fostering strong ties and mutual collaboration. “We are proud of our shared efforts to ensure a prosperous future for our people,” Blinken said.

The message concluded with warm congratulations to Belize and Belizeans around the world as we mark another year of independence.
