By Horace Palacio: As Belize commemorates its 43rd Independence Day, residents and visitors alike are navigating a mix of celebration and weather watchfulness. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, particularly over southern regions, are expected to punctuate the festive atmosphere. The National Meteorological Service (NMS) issued a morning forecast for September 21st, predicting cloudy spells with a few showers and the chance of thunderstorms.
Marine conditions are expected to remain relatively calm, with easterly winds blowing at 5-10 knots and a slight sea state. Temperatures are anticipated to be warm, reaching highs of 94°F (34°C) inland, while coastal areas offer some relief with temperatures in the mid-80s Fahrenheit (around 30°C).
Adding a layer of uncertainty to the holiday weekend, the NMS is closely monitoring a broad area of low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean Sea. This system has the potential to develop into a tropical depression by the end of next week. While tropical cyclone formation is not expected in the next 48 hours, the NMS will continue to track the system’s progress.
Looking ahead, the forecast indicates that a few showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue to affect the country on Sunday, with an increase in activity expected Sunday night.
Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the spirit of Independence Day remains strong in Belize. Celebrations and festivities are expected to continue, albeit with some adjustments for the rain. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on the latest weather information and take necessary precautions as scattered showers and possible thunderstorms are expected to linger.
The combination of Independence Day celebrations and the looming tropical threat creates a unique atmosphere in Belize this weekend. While the weather may dampen some outdoor activities, it serves as a reminder of the country’s resilience and ability to adapt, qualities that have been crucial throughout its history.
