Premier League of Belize: Verdes claim first place with 3-0 victory over Progresso

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes dumped Progresso FC 3-0 in Week 7 of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) on Independence Day Eve, knocking them out of the top spot. While the Green Machine have been on the upswing, Progresso have been on the downslide drawing the previous two games. They have now only tallied two points out of a possible nine from their last three outings. Verdes, on the other hand, have won the last two after falling 3-2 to Port Layola in Week 5.

Nahjib Guerra was the star of the show at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, recording a brace in the 47^th and 90’+2 minutes. Colombian Yubeiquer Arenas opened the scoring when he found the net in the 11^th minute.

With the 3-0 victory, Verdes also exacted revenge on Progresso, who had beaten them 1-0 on Saturday, August 10.

Verdes now have 15 points, one more than Progresso, who find themselves out of first place for the first time this season.

San Pedro beat Bandits 1-0 in San Pedro on Friday night as well.

Only the Wagiya-Port Layola match is left to be played. That match is scheduled for 4:00 pm on Sunday at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga.
