By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: “We see less absenteeism because the students know they will get a meal at school,” Seleni Grajales.
Today, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise is featuring Principal Seleni Grajales from Santa Martha Government Primary School in Orange Walk.
Since 2022, Grajales has been leading a remarkable transformation with the support of the Resilient School Feeding sub-project under the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO Initiative, the school built its first garden and kitchen, providing healthy meals for 130 students daily.
“From the school garden to the classroom, students learn about healthy eating, gardening, and the food chain—empowering them with life skills that also nourish their bodies,” the Ministry noted.
Now, more students are attending school regularly.
“Parents have peace of mind, knowing their children are eating healthy meals. And for the first time, 14 out of 18 students are continuing to high school,” the Ministry added.
This initiative is proof that food security and education go hand-in-hand, creating opportunities for growth and development for both students and families.
