By Aaron Humes: The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) has revealed that over 130 teachers are still awaiting their September salaries, echoing a recurring issue that has plagued educators each year.
Despite prior warnings from the Union, numerous teachers were dismayed to discover last week that their monthly compensation had not been deposited into their accounts as scheduled. Some individuals have reportedly gone unpaid for four to five months, highlighting a persistent challenge within the education sector.
Efforts to address the situation have been complicated by the absence of top officials from the Ministry of Education, who are currently on duty leave. However, Acting Prime Minister and a former Minister of Education, Cordel Hyde, has intervened, committing to ensure that teachers receive their overdue payments by the end of the week.
In response to the crisis, the BNTU has been actively engaging with relevant authorities and advocating for the timely disbursement of salaries. While expressing disappointment over the recurring issue, the Union acknowledges the dedicated efforts of Ministry of Education officials who are now working diligently to resolve the matter.
As the situation unfolds, teachers and stakeholders eagerly await a swift resolution to the salary delays, emphasizing the critical importance of addressing these challenges to support the country’s educators.
Some teachers in the Stann Creek District raised the issue of unpaid increments while participating in the Independence Day parade in Dangriga. The Union and its labour fellows have begun negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement with the Government.
