International News: Mexico’s First Female President vows ‘no return’ to irresponsible drug war

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s first female president, vowed during her swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday that there would be no return to the “irresponsible” drug war against cartels.

The Telegraph reports that Sheinbaum emphasized the need for increased intelligence and investigations to address the escalating drug-related violence, particularly in light of recent deadly clashes between factions of the Sinaloa cartel, which have resulted in over 50 deaths.

Sheinbaum, who previously served as mayor of Mexico City, echoed the sentiments of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who declared an end to the drug war in favor of addressing the root causes of violence.

In her inauguration speech, she also outlined plans to limit food and fuel prices and expand cash assistance programs for women and children.

Sheinbaum also said: “It’s time for transformation, it’s time for women.

“I’m a mother, a grandmother, a scientist and a woman of faith, and from today, by the will of the Mexican people, the president.”

A scientist and advocate for women’s rights, Sheinbaum celebrated her historic election victory in June, and her inauguration marked a significant moment in Mexican history as lawmakers chanted “Presidenta!”—the feminine form of president—for the first time in over 200 years.
