By Horace Palacio: The National Meteorological Service of Belize is forecasting cloudy spells with a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms across the country today and tonight. Residents in inland areas should be prepared for increased rainfall this afternoon, while coastal regions and the south may experience showers and thunderstorms tonight.
While the immediate forecast focuses on local weather patterns, all eyes are on the tropics as Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Kirk continue to develop in the Atlantic Ocean.
Tropical Storm Leslie is currently located approximately 515 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving westward at a slow pace. With maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, Leslie is not posing an immediate threat to Belize. However, its progress will be closely monitored over the coming days.
Of greater concern is Hurricane Kirk, a powerful storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. Located 1185 miles east-northeast of the Lesser Antilles, Kirk is moving northwestward. While it is still too early to determine the exact path and potential impact of Hurricane Kirk, the National Meteorological Service urges residents to stay informed and prepared for any potential changes in the storm’s trajectory.
Expect a mix of clouds and sunshine today with temperatures reaching a high of 90°F (32°C) along the coast and 94°F (34°C) inland. Tonight, temperatures will drop to a low of 83°F (28°C) on the coast and 73°F (23°C) inland. Mariners can expect light and variable winds with slight sea states and waves reaching 1-3 feet.
The outlook for Friday and Friday night predicts similar weather conditions, with continued chances of showers and thunderstorms.
The National Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the development of both Tropical Storm Leslie and Hurricane Kirk and provide updates to the public. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to local news sources and official weather advisories for the latest information.
