By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old resident of Mahogany Heights, Michael Denzil Flores, is behind bars tonight after being unable to post bail on a charge of threatening to damage property. Flores, a food vendor, appeared before Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola in Belize City’s Court #1, where he faced a single charge of threatening to burn down a woman’s home in Mahogany Heights.
The alleged incident occurred on October 2, 2024, when Flores reportedly told the woman, “Tonight this wah bun down,” in reference to her house, intending to instill fear that he would carry out the threat.
In court, Flores pleaded guilty but with an explanation, claiming that it was the woman’s son who had threatened him first, saying he would “burst his face and chop him up.” He denied ever threatening to burn down the house. Based on his explanation, the Chief Magistrate did not accept his guilty plea.
Although the prosecutor did not object to bail, Flores was unable to meet the $500 bail and was remanded to Belize Central Prison. He will remain in custody until he can post bail. His next court appearance is set for November 22, 2024, with the condition that he must not commit any further offenses while out on bail.
