Taiwan supports Belize Forest Department in combating wildlife trafficking and trade

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On October 3, 2024, Minister Orlando Habet, along with Chief Forest Officer Wilber Sabido and Deputy Chief Forest Officer John Pinelo Jr., received a cheque for BZD $40,000 from Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Lily Li-Wen Hsu.

This funding was made possible by the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Belize and the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture of Taiwan.

The funds will support two micro-projects aimed at managing illegal wildlife trafficking and trade within the Belize Forest Department. Each grant amounts to US $10,000.

The first project focuses on strengthening the Forest Department’s response to incidents of illegal wildlife trafficking through educational awareness initiatives.

The second grant will enhance enforcement efforts to tackle wildlife trafficking effectively.

Both projects are set to run for one year and will significantly strengthen the Forest Department’s capacity to raise awareness and respond to the detrimental impacts of illegal wildlife trafficking in Belize and the broader region.

The Belize Forest Department and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change extended gratitude to the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for their generous support.
