By BBN Staff: An oil tanker “under the flag of Belize” and its crew were intercepted in Lybia on Tuesday as it attempted to smuggle fuel.
The Belize-flagged Temeteron oil tanker is reported to be loaded with 5,227 metric tons of illicit diesel fuel and was intercepted by Azzawiya and Tripoli coast guards about 11 miles off the Abu Kamash district.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry indicated to the media that five Russian nationals were among the tanker’s crew. It is reported that the captain is Russian. Reports are that several Ukrainian and Greek nationals were also found among the crew. The men were then transported to Tripoli’s military port.
Other reports indicate that the tanker belongs to a Greek company.
Officials are still trying to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident the report concludes.
