By Aaron Humes: As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and under the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT), Belize is subject to a review of its trade policies every six years.
The third such review is now on and Belize’s Ministry of Trade and Directorate of Foreign Trade are hosting consultants of the WTO this week.
Belize, said Director General Leroy Almendarez, has come a long way since 2004 when the first review took place, including increases in human capacity and data collection.
WTO Counselor John Finn repeated that the organization is not writing the review on its own, and welcomed all cooperation with the government and its agencies.
In related news, a National Trade Policy is to be launched later this week.
