By Aaron Humes: It’s common for major projects under the environmental impact assessment process organized by the Department of the Environment (DOE) to hold public consultations to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a project – and engagements tend to be robust, as with the Harvest Caye and Blackadore Caye developments.
But Mayan Cable Tubing Limited, based in Orange Walk, has met with the Belize City Council several times to discuss a proposed water park establishment along the Newtown Barracks at Sandlighter’s Promenade, and while the Council is inclined to agree, it does want the public’s participation.
So a consultation has been scheduled for Wednesday night at the Promenade to give residents an opportunity to speak.
Proprietor Raul Pelayo says this idea has been kicking around for several years and most of the various agencies have signed off on it.
Pelayo told us that jobs will be available, mostly for young people and that the company will offer training to applicants. The consultation will also be broadcast live on a local radio station. The EIA consultation is planned for a later time.
