By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister Right Honorable Dean Barrow warned against “jumping to wrongunnamed conclusions” based on the reports that several of his area representatives and ministers were being wined and dined by now accused murderer and con artist William Mason.

Meanwhile, police say that a videotape purporting to depict activities leading up to the murder of Llewellyn Lucas is being reviewed and could lead to additional leads and avenues of investigation.

Acting Commissioner of Police Russell Blackett, an investigator with 39 years’ experience, admits it is one of the most unnerving investigations he has undertaken but is determined to see it through to the end.

russell-blackettOther persons are expected to be questioned with regard to their activities on the Mason property at the time Mason and his five accused were there on Friday, July 15th.

Meanwhile, Minister of National Security John Saldivar says he is not concerned about any documents or evidence the police may find at Mason’s home that can be linked to his dealings with Mason and is confident that police will do their job and secure the evidence necessary to bring the case to a satisfactory conclusion.

Regarding the “optics” of his ministers’ associations with Mason, the Prime Minister said it will be dealt with but continued to insist that such knowledge did and could not have led to any undue influence or exchange of favors between them.

However, Barrow says that out of his cabinet, only now Minister of State, Frank “Papa” Mena received campaign financing from Mason, of 10 thousand dollars. That transfer of funds occurred ahead of the papa mena
July 2015 bye-election for the Dangriga Division which saw Mena challenged by the PUP’s Anthony Sabal and the now deceased, Pastor Llewellyn Lucas. Mena held on to the seat in a rematch with Sabal in the November general election.

The Prime Minister almost bristled at the allegation that it was then Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega, currently the agriculture minister who introduced Mason to the Mennonites – he flatly said it was “not true.”

We have received reports that in the case of the Mennonite couple who fled to Canada, after confronting Mason and being threatened, the business deal gone wrong was to the tune of a quarter million dollars.
