By Aaron Humes: Police could not act on various reports in which William Mason, murder accused, was a suspect because his victims did not file police reports, ensuring that there was nothing on record suggesting him as a threat to public safety.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow told reporters in Belize City today that according to his own investigations, all that was known around town in Belmopan is that quote “the man will rob you blind” end quote; no one decided to report it, however.
Police did shadow Mason but could do little more than that until they finally caught up with him on Friday.
Barrow said he was only just informed about the kidnapping of the Canadians three weeks ago and noted that as of that time, they had not made a formal report: they have since spoken twice with Police.
Minister of National Security, Honorable John Saldivar clarified why police did not search Mason’s property: they acted cautiously to ensure that Mason was caught red-handed.
The officials insist that none of the con man’s victims ever requested court action. In the case of a report that Mason extorted a well-known Belmopan businessman, Barrow said no formal police report was ever filed.
