By Aaron Humes: Vision Inspired by the People (VIP) in a press release demands that Government take “full responsibility” for the murder of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas, and further demands that it makes proper compensation to his family.
According to the minor party, even after the Government, specifically Minister of National Security John Saldivar, became aware of the dubious character of accused William Mason, who was under surveillance by the Police, the Department did not act against him to protect the general public, even after it became clear that his serious criminal activities had been officially reported to Police.
Instead, he got the many services that, quote, “legitimized his many operations in Belize,” end quote, and wined and dined the same high ranking government officials, and in one case contributed to their political campaign.
Quote, In the circumstances Government’s ability to offer protection to its citizens against a known criminal was severely compromised by self-interest, cronyism and political opportunism. This has resulted in the death of a well-loved Belizean citizen who had offered himself as a candidate for political office. End quote, the party states.
An impartial investigation into the murder must, according to VIP, (a) Critically examine the role of the Police Department in the process; b) determine any dereliction of duties by public/police officers and Government ministers and appropriate sanction, and (c) Make recommendations for effective screening of non- Belizean investors and Security and protection of locals.
