By Dalila Ical: Sugar cane farmers have planned a more organized demonstration at the BSI entrance on Friday July 29th.
Alfredo Ortega, Chairman of the Orange Walk Branch of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association says they are asking all farmers, from all branches and all associations to be present as “everybody is affected….so together we can send a message to BSI that we are not happy with what is happening but we also want a very peaceful demonstration tomorrow.”
Farmers are still protesting BSI’s position that farmers should shoulder part of the loss, well over 60 percent of the total loss, of almost 4,000 tons of molasses earlier this month. Ortega says farmers should not be penalized for it.
They are expecting at least a 1,000 farmers to show up in tomorrow’s peaceful demonstration which starts at 9:00 in the morning and concludes at 1:00 in the afternoon.
