By Aaron Humes: This afternoon in Belize City, persons entrusted with caring for senior citizens were trained by a group of university professors and students from the University of Indianapolis.
We spoke to professor Tammy Simmons who stated that caregivers must be careful not to take on too much responsibility and emphasized that little must change for the senior citizen who is used to taking care of himself. For those with Alzheimer’s and dementia, emphasis must be placed on continuous activity to stimulate the mind.
Chairman of the board for the Sister Cecilia Home for the Elderly, Bernard Adolphus, says taking care of our oldest and wisest involves patience, discipline and understanding; after all, we will all be older someday.
