By BBN Staff: Residents in the small communities of Gardenia and Biscayne will finally have access to the continuous supply of reliable and safe quality water to meet their daily needs such as drinking, washing, bathing and cooking thanks to the Government of Belize.
A total of $999,408.49 has been invested in this project through a loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). An official ceremony to inaugurate Gardenia/Biscayne Water Supply Sub-project will be held at Gardenia Community Centre at 9:00 a.m this morning. 
According to a government press release issued this morning, “The completion of the water supply sub-project will also contribute significantly in the reduction in the vulnerability of men, women and children of Gardenia/Biscayne to incidences of water-borne, food borne and vector borne diseases in addition to communicable and non-communicable diseases. The Government of Belize in this regard, is making critical achievements in improving the wellness, and quality of health of Gardenia/Biscayne residents, surrounding communities and by extension, the country of Belize.”
The release added that the completion of the water project also demonstrates government’s unwavering commitment to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals, otherwise known as the Global Goals, building on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as it relates to water; which is to reduce by half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water. Prior to the 
rehabilitation of the water system, residents of both villages had experienced challenges to access potable water; and obtained water from wells that often dried up in the dry season, creeks, vats and from water by trucks courtesy of the Area Representative, Edmond Castro.
The Scope of Works included the installation of transmission/distribution water main lines in Gardenia Village from miles 20 to 23 to Belize Water Services water grid from Mexico Creek, Sand Hill village; and installation of transmission/distribution water main lines from mile 23 in Gardenia village to 24.5 mile in Biscayne Village. Furthermore, BWS is funding the extension of the water system for the remaining Biscayne community.”
The project was possible through the collaboration of the CDB, Belize Water Services Ltd., Social Investment Funds and the Government of Belize.
