GOB MEMOBy BBN Staff: On August 29th, Financial Secretary Joseph Waight issued a memo to Chief Executive Officers, Heads of Departments and Accounting officers ordering the enforcement of the policies governing usage of all government vehicles.

“All vehicles, except those authorized for twenty-four (24) hours use, should be garaged at the end of each day, on weekends and on public and bank holidays at a secure designated location (Reference to Ministry of Finance Circular No. 2 of 2015 dated July 10, 2015.),” the memo reads.

Waight, in his memo, detailed cases where authorization forms were not being used by Public officers traveling in vehicles after working hours, weekends and public and bank holidays. “For the most part, they were not doing or providing any service on behalf of the Government to the citizens of Belize,” the memo added.

It is on this notion that the vehicle care unit is imposing the following penalties to those not adhering to the vehicle policy effective September 1, 2016:

1. Impounding of vehicles by the Vehicle Care Unit and transport department personnel.

2. A reduction of 20 percent in monthly fuel allocation for unauthorized use of vehicles.

3. Penalization of drivers in accordance with Section 5.3 of the Disciplinary Procedures
