By BBN Staff: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) issued a press release in response to the Prime Minister’s press conference held on Thursday. The BPP refers to the PM’s conference as being “Vintage Barrow”, describing the manner in which he placed the Auditor General’s report under public scrutiny.
“It was a noteworthy political performance, yet to the discerning public, it was clearly devoid of substance in terms of how the leader of this nation should function. Instead of commending the Auditor General, the PM squandered yet another opportunity to demonstrate genuine and to show that consecutive victories at the polls, translates into respectable, national stewardship,” the BPP said.
The party urged all Belizeans at home and abroad to remain focused on the substantive issues of the country that were not addressed.
The release further states: “Instead of agreeing to sign on to the UN Convention Against Corruption, without further delay, the Prime Minister fundamentally created additional layers of insulation, that will inevitably provide a buffer behind which he can hide, in plain sight. While the members of BPP have championed the call for Belize to sign on to UNCAC for the last 12 years, we remind the PM of his utter failure to obey our own Prevention of Corruption Act.”
The party added that where the Auditor General’s report is concerned, the PM has cast himself as “judge, jury and quite presumably executioner insofar as the manner in which the report was conducted, as opposed to dealing with the substantive issues of misconduct and outright corruption that persists involving matters of immigration.”
The BPP said the Prime Minister has continuously deceived the people and called on Belizeans to demand that all elected officials who were cited in the Auditor General’s Report, be held accountable.
The party also expressed disappointment at Church Senator Ashley Rocke’s decision to vote against convening a Senate Select Committee to address the immigration related irregularities. The party called for the immediate resignation of Senator Rocke.
