By BBN Staff: The government of Belize has changed its position on a bi-cameral House-Senate select committee on the investigation into the claims made in the Auditor General’s Immigration audit.

According to GOB, “Cabinet is prepared to support a Senate Select Committee rather than a bi-cameral Joint Select Committee inquiry into the Auditor General’s Immigration Special Report.”
GOB says it was persuaded to take this position after the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the Belize Council of Churches, who both supported Cabinet’s initial bi-cameral counter-proposal, changed their respective positions.
The government says it was also persuaded by the fact that a seemingly substantial portion of the public apparently prefers the Senate to conduct the hearings. GOB added that it also supports the position that a social partner should Chair that committee.
GOB, however, says it still insists that the composition of the committee reflect the balance of power in the Chamber, as mandated by the Standing Orders of the House.
Cabinet, according to the release, supports a proposal from the Council of Churches and the Belize Association of Evangelical Christians that the Senate Special Select Committee be comprised of the three social partners, one opposition member and three from the government.
