By Richard Harrison: When the Mayor of Belize, Darryl Bradley first expressed his plan to launch a municipal bond for cementing 100 Belize City streets….his own UDP party, and especially the “brain thrust” of its leadership, were putting up all kinds of obstacles and raising all kinds of objections….his PUP detractors were bashing his plan left, right and center. I was the first to publicly support his initiative in writing…to the chagrin of both UDP and PUP supporters.
It is my opinion that PM Dean Barrow owes his three-peat to the Mayor….because once the PetroCaribe was re-started in 2012, the PM had already realized the potential of the Mayors cement street politics…and copied it to a countrywide scale….which is principally the politics that make the three-peat possible.
Now, the Mayor has come out in support of a thorough investigation into the Immigration and Nationality scandal exposed by the Auditor General’s report. The Mayor was obviously listening to the people of Belize….even after the PM had his rubber stamp Senate majority voted to decline a thorough investigation. It is interesting to see the PM changing his tune…
In the wake of Hurricane Earl, the Mayor appeared on CNN and represented Belize City and Belize very well. The people of Belize mobilized very rapidly to recover….with very little help from their local and central governments. The PM himself did nothing more than appoint a new Minister of Begging in his Cabinet.
The Mayor is a long shot from perfect….but he is doing some welcome things differently.
