By Zoila Palma: The Vision Insired by the People (VIP) issued a release expressing its full support for the Belize National teachers Union (BNTU) national demonstration to protest government’s proposal for the deferral of agreed upon salary increases and also to make demands on burning national issues.
A special committee composed of both government and union representatives had determined a revenue sharing agreement that the salary increases are based on.
The Committee examined government’s financial records and agreed that the 3 percent increase was justified.
The release expresses the VIP’s view that public officers are therefore to be commended for diligently increasing government’s revenues while at the same time minimizing expenditures which resulted in excess funds to pay for the salary increase. This salary increase therefore has already been earned and teachers must be paid.
The VIP listed some demands that will be protested including a Senate inquiry into the bucket sale of Belizean Nationality and passports at the Immigration Department by Ministers of Government, the restoration of the Integrity Commission and the Public Accounts Committee, an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the brutal slaying of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas and the immediate signing and ratification of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
It ends by stating that the VIP stands in support and in solidarity with all of these demands and will join the BNTU in the protest action.
They further encourage all Belizeans to support the teachers!
