By BBN Staff:  This morning the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) issued a press release regarding the Guatemalan President speech at the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations.

“Despite the findings of the independent forensic investigation, which exonerated the Belize Defence Force in the killing of a Guatemalan minor who was illegally in Belizean territory, during the 71st General Assembly of the United Nations, Guatemalan President, Jimmy Morales proceeded to blatantly spread untruths about that issue, as well as related matters,” the BPP release states.

“His brash and bold mischaracterizations were testimony to the fact that, even in the midst of proof, the Guatemalans shall go to any lengths to seek to demonise Belize and Belizeans.  This is par for the course concerning his nation’s traditionally aggressive stance regarding Belize and in particular, his administration has taken matters to an even more egregious level,” the release further adds.

In the release, the BPP also noted the past weekend’s BTV Kayak Eco Challenge in the Toledo District where members of their party were on hand to support the effort and were summarily accosted by armed Guatemalan Naval Personnel, as they circled the Sarstoon Island.

According to the BPP, they sincerely hope that Belize’s representative to the UN meeting takes the opportunity to demonstrate some semblance of national pride and endeavours to set the record straight especially given the natural patriotic fervour which normally accompanies Belize’s September Celebrations.

“We wish that Foreign Minister Elrington would, for once, stand up for Belize.”

The release ends by saying, “ the Belize Progressive Party calls on Belizeans and true friends of Belize, both at home and abroad, to take these ineffectual, elected representatives to task, by demanding their resignation.”
