By BBN Staff:This evening, hurricane Matthew was upgraded to a category 5 hurricane with top winds measured at 160 mph as it moved across the Caribbean Sea on a potentially catastrophic path to Jamaica.
Matthew continues to move west-southwest through the Caribbean Sea. It is the strongest in the Atlantic since 2007’s Hurricane Felix.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami said that it is possible to gain additional strength within the next few days.
The maximum sustained winds of Matthew were measured at 160 mph, which made it a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the highest classification.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Colombian and Venezuelan border to Riohacha.
A hurricane watch is in effect for Jamaica.
Hispaniola and eastern Cuba should monitor the progress of the storm.
Forecasters say that Matthew is projected to turn toward the west and remain a powerful hurricane through Sunday.
