By BBN Staff:The Oceana “Ocean hero” award began in 2012. The purpose is to recognize and celebrate exceptional accomplishments in ocean conservation, advocacy and education.
Oceana describes it as taking action to protect the oceans for the people and the creatures today and for generations to come.
Janet Gibson and Wil Maheia were the awardees for the 2016 ocean awards.
Maheia founded one of the most important voices in conservation in Southern Belize, the Toledo Institute for Development and the Environment (TIDE) and moved on to also create Toledo Exposure and the Belize Territorial Volunteers.
He has been an advocate against destructive fishing equipment such as gillnets and has highlighted its illegal usage in Belizean waters.
The Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage recognized Froyla Salam from Toledo through the dedicated work of SATIIM.
