By BBN Staff:While many Belizeans spent the Pan American weekend with families at home or vacationing in the Cayes, or Playa del Carmen, Cancun and other popular areas abroad, the Police had a tragic weekend to deal with. Apart from the drowning of a teenager in Belmopan, there were 3 murders, 3 traffic fatalities resulting from 2 separate traffic accidents and 5 people were shot in 2 separate incidents.
On Friday, 7th October, just around 11 p.m., 37 year old Alfonso ‘Archie’ Mendoza of Unitedville, Cayo District, was riding his bicycle home when he was knocked down in the vicinity of Mount Hope and died on the spot of head and body injuries.
Also on Friday night, 25 year old Abraham Diaz and 34 year old Alfonso Solis both of August Pine Ridge died after the motorcycle they were riding was involved in an accident with a black Ford F-200 pickup. The pickup was traveling from August Pine Ridge towards San Felipe in the Orange Walk district and the collision occurred between miles 18 and 19.
On Saturday, 8th October, the body of Benjamin Gomez of San Ignacio Town was discovered about 5:45 in the morning at a bus stop on Joseph Andrews drive by San Ignacio Police. Gomez, a homeless man, was motionless, had multiple stab wounds to the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Hospital.
On Sunday, 9th October, the second murder occurred in Bella Vista Village in the Toledo District. The victim, 21 year old Guatemalan Edilsar Abimael Mendez, was found about 6:00 in the morning lying down on the floor of a small room with injuries to his face and cut wounds to the throat.
Also on Sunday 9th October just after lunch, the body of Ashley Justin Clarke was found behind a motel in Belmopan in an advanced state of decomposition with what appears to be a wound to the back of his head. Clarke, a 23 year old Belmopan resident, had not returned home after he was last seen alive socializing around 11:30 p.m. at a popular night club.
And in Belize City, there were two separate shootings on the Southside on Friday night, leaving five people injured. All five men, including a police officer and a BDF soldier, were hospitalized.
