By BBN Staff: The Caribbean Union of Teachers (CUT) which is the umbrella organization for the Teachers’ Unions in the Caribbean, and affiliate to the BNTU, has written to Prime Minister Dean Barrow.
In the letter dated October 10, 2016, CUT asked PM Barrow to seek to bring an amicable solution to the strike situation and stated that for 8 years, the BNTU have been patient with the authorities to ensure that the Collective Bargaining process is preserved.
“The actions of the Government negotiating team demonstrate a lack of respect for this internationally accepted principle. Unnecessarily delaying a process that would regulate the working relationship between teachers and their employer is unacceptable,” they wrote.
CUT believes that no negotiating process or resulting collective agreement should threaten the employment status, service benefits, or rights of employees.
“CUT cannot accept a situation where any government seeks to make workers worse off by failing or refusing to agree to make the necessary salary adjustments that would enable the workers to cope in this economically trying time,” they argued in the letter.
In the interest of industrial peace and the national development of Belize, CUT is requesting that PM Barrow intervene to bring a speedy resolution to the impasse.
They ended the letter by stating, “It is our hope that your government will do all in its power to ensure that the education of the young people of Belize can continue uninterrupted. This, the CUT knows for certain, will happen when the legitimate and just demands of the teachers are met. CUT trusts that you will consider our appeal.”
