By BBN Staff: Breaking Belize News visited the low lying wooden bridge earlier today and confirmed that repairs are almost completed. Despite being closed to vehicular traffic, the BBN reporter on the ground noted that pedestrians, bicycles and even motorcycles are already using the wooden bridge.
The wooden bridge, which connects San Ignacio and Santa Elena, was damaged in early August by the floods in the aftermath of Hurricane Earl. Immediately after the hurricane, the Ministry of Works had estimated a down time of 1 month for repairs but later informed that repairs would be completed by October 15th.
The twin towns continues to be congested especially during peak hours as the Hawkesworth Bridge only is used to facilitate two way traffic. The finishing work on the wooden bridge, however, is expected to take a few more days and commuters will soon no longer have to deal with the long wait to cross the Hawkesworth Bridge.
