By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) issued a press release yesterday expressing its continuous demand for an independent and impartial Senate Select Committee to be appointed to conduct a senate inquiry into the Immigration and Nationality Department scandal.
The party lists the reasons why the motion put forth on September 30 is invalid. According to the PUP, Minister of Immigration Godwin Hulse, voted on the motion when he should have abstained since his involvement in the scandal is a conflict of interest, his participation in the senate meeting was unconstitutional as he violated Section 121 of the Belize constitution and that the motion that was presented by Church Senator Ashley Rocke was a government motion in an attempt to deceive the Belizean people and the Senate.
“The motion was bogus; the voting was bogus,” the PUP says.
The PUP believes that a committee of five is the most impartial and independent composition for a fair investigation by the senate and avoids any deadlock on the recommendations and decisions of the committee.
The release also states that the committee must have its own budget and members must have the power to call witnesses and legal independent expert advise.
It ends by reiterating that the people of Belize are demanding the immediate appointment of the 13th senator , the re-constituting of the Public Accounts Committee, the appointment of the Integrity Commission, the immediate signing of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption and a Senate Special Select Committee of five.
