By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) has issued a press release confirming that the law enforcement authority has issued a permit to supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP) to protest and picket the headquarters of the BNTU in Belize City tomorrow, Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“The BNTU wishes to express to the nation of Belize that in no way do we wish to infringe on the right of any person or organization to hold a public protest, for whatever the reason. We are however, very much concerned that the UDP will be allowed to come to the doorstep of the BNTU when we have our members here, daily, conducting activities related to our Stand Up for Belize strike action,” states the release.
“We see this as not only an inconvenience but yet ANOTHER attempt of the ruling party to instill fear and intimidation. We wish to vehemently condemn this action and call on the people of Belize to join us in calling them out for their obvious desperation,” the release further asserts.
According to the BNTU, all of their actions as it relates to the strike have been peaceful and they intend to keep it so for the duration of the strike.
The BNTU also asks the law enforcement authority to ensure that no damage is done to the property of the BNTU or those of the members/teachers who congregate at the headquarters daily.
The release ends by saying, “The Power of the People is Greater than the people in Power. We shall not be moved.”
