By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) decided to finish off the week with strike action, after meeting with Prime Minister Dean Barrow today.
BNTU President Luke Palacio explained at the meeting that while the Prime Minister made the commitment to sign the commencement order for the 13 senator, many of the union’s demands, including the 3 percent salary adjustment, remain unmet.
“It got worse.” Palacio said. “There were certain issues that we thought we would have gotten the Prime minister to agree on, but we see that hit has gone in a different direction.”
He explained that Barrow had promised to consider removing Godwin Hulse as the Minister responsible for the police; however, at today’s meeting, Barrow was adamant that he would not do so. He also mentioned that Barrow had previously offered amending the social security act as a bargain for teachers’ returning to the classroom, but took that proposal off the table at this meeting.
The BNTU met with Barrow for over four hours at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza this afternoon, after which the Prime Minister gave a press conference explaining that he had agreed to the majority of the demands the BNTU had proposed.
Barrow said that the meeting was amiable and respectful, and that GOB is awaiting a response from the union by tomorrow, on whether or not they will accept GOB’s proposals put forward at he meeting.
The union will be going back to its membership over the weekend to plan its next move.
