By BBN Staff: Following a meeting of the Executive Council of the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) held this morning, the Chamber has decided not to proceed with the national shutdown of businesses.
At its membership meeting held in Belize City last week, the Chamber’s membership had voted for a one day national shutdown if Government did not respond favorably to the good governance agenda. However, over the weekend Prime Minister Barrow briefed the Chamber’s President, Nikita Usher, and the Executive Council concluded that “sufficient progress is being made with respect to the good governance issues referred to in our Resolution”.
PM Barrow informed the Chamber that on Thursday GoB will sign the commencement order effecting the appointment of the 13th Senator and implementation is to occur within the next three months. GoB has also agreed to activate the Integrity Commission after appointing a chartered accountant from a list of five to be presented by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Belize (ICAB). The Integrity Commission is scheduled for activation on or by November 9, 2016.
The Prime Minister also informed that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will be reconstituted. The Attorney General, Vanessa Retreage is currently redrafting the standing orders to allow for inclusion of the Social Partner Senators. No deadline was provided for the implementation of this proposal.
Finally, on the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) bill, the Prime Minister will appoint a tri partite joint committee to finalize its drafting.
According to the announcement from the BCCI, it will remain vigilant and keep members updated on the progress of the good governance measures, including the signing of the United Nation’s Convention on Corruption (UNCAC) which Government has agreed to sign on December 9.
