By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) had organized a thank you rally to be held tomorrow October 29th in Belize city.

The rally has now shifted to a national demonstration as a result of the back and forth between the union and the Ministry of Education.

Ministry is insisting that they will not pay the teachers contributions for the days they were on strike and suggested that BNTU use its strike fund to pay teachers.

A meeting which was scheduled for today was postponed because the Minister of Education had requested for a limited amount of members from the council of management attend the meetings.

The BNTU’s council of managements meeting with government usually comprises of the entire council which is 25 members.

BNTU’s president Luke Palacio told the media yesterday that  “On Saturday we are having a national demonstration and rally here in Belize City and one of course to thank those individuals groups and organizations that gave us tremendous support during our strike action and again to the public to help us to call for the government that the teachers deserve to get their salaries so this is an invitation to the public to come out on Saturday the ad should be running later today and we start from 9 o’clock in front of Channel 5 and we will parade through the street of Belize City and have a rally at the memorial park, all branches have been informed and invited to be a part of the rally. “

This rally was initially planned to only be a thank you rally but it is now a demonstration to protest that the union is not satisfied with the way the ministry or the minister of education is trying to take advantage of the teachers.
