By BBN Staff: Yesterday, NEMO Minister Edmond Castro joined United States Ambassador H.E. Carlos Moreno in cutting the symbolic ribbon to inaugurate a new facility for NEMO Toledo consisting of a Disaster Relief Warehouse and Emergency Operations Centre valued at over US$1.5 Million.
The facility is located at Machaca Forest Station on the Southern Highway just outside Punta Gorda, it was constructed and donated to Belize by the United States Government through its military Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) with funding from its Humanitarian Assistance Project (HAP).
Besides Castro and Ambassador Moreno, other officials speaking at the ceremony this morning included Chairperson of NEMO Toledo, Punta Gorda Mayor Fern Gutierrez; NEMO National Emergency Coordinator Colonel Shelton DeFour; and NEMO Toledo District Coordinator Kenton Parham who gave the Welcome Address. The Vote of Thanks was delivered by NEMO Toledo District Assistant Coordinator Dennis Williams; and Master of Ceremonies was Paul Mahung.
A release from the United States Embassy says the Warehouse and Operations Centre will enable NEMO to effectively coordinate disaster response, provide relief efforts and deliver timely assistance to the people of Belize, especially in remote areas.
The US Embassy will hand over an Emergency Operations Centre in Orange Walk Town next month.
