By Charles Leslie Jr.: Belizeans have the fear of feeling like they can’t do things completely on their own. They depend on the government, on their leaders, on everybody but themselves. If they could end this dependency, they would have the power to reverse everything that is wrong with this country.
We live in a culture of dependency. It is hard to resist. But once you give in, it is like a prison you enter that you cannot ever leave. We got our independence on September 21st, 1981, but only on paper. Dependency still imprisons us.
Since then and to this day, as a nation, as a people, we continually look outward for help and this severely limits our options and maneuverability.
DEPENDENCY CRIPPLES DECISION-MAKING
When the time comes, as it inevitably does when you must make an important decision, you have nothing inside of yourself to depend on. Now take this and overlay it on our leaders, on ourselves. Our leaders are lost and have no clue on what to do to save Belize, and the only group of people that stood up for our children’s future were our teachers.
WHAT WE NEED
What Belize needs is to truly become free, independent and sovereign, because we never were. We must start to move in the opposite direction, out of our comfort zone, thinking outside the box and become self-reliant. self-reliance must become the habit and once we do that, we will start attracting leaders that will also want self-reliance for our nation.
It’s time to take full possession of the independence and freedom we got on September 21st, 1981.
