By BBN Staff: Belize was recently granted US $300,000 from the Green Climate Fund to help Belize prepare for the effects of climate change.

According to a statement released from GOB, Minister with responsibilities for Climate Change, Omar Figueroa, met with the Green Climate Fund (GCF), represented by Ousseynou Nakoulima, Director of Country Programming.

The two met at the 22nd meeting of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Marrakech, Morocco to sign a letter of agreement to finalize the proposed funding.

According to the statement, “The Readiness Grant will allow the GOB to strengthen the capacity of its National Designation Authority, the liaison between the Fund and Government of Belize, as well as identify priority programs for funding from the GCF.”

However, GOB will not work in isolation and will be assisted for 12 months by the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center (CCCCC), the only regionally accredited entity to the Green Climate Fund.

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Environment and Sustainable Development will all work closely with the National Designated Authority (NDA) and the CCCCC to ensure that this Readiness Grant is executed within the time frame.
