By BBN Staff: Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin has ruled against the Ministry of Education and has ruled that teachers should receive their full salaries at the end of November.
On Friday, attorney Eamon Courtenay representing the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) filed a suit against the Ministry, which had previously threatened to dock the pays of teachers who participated in a bold 11-day strike.
The CJ delivered his ruling today, which is to the benefit of thousands of teachers who would have been denied their last salary before Christmas if Minister of Education, Patrick Faber, had his way.
Since the injunction was granted, MOE may not be able to dock the salaries in November as originally planned. However, if the MOE wins the case, then the deduction may occur at a later date. If the BNTU wins the case, then no deduction may be possible.
