By BBN Staff: On Friday, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. It is a truth still shocking to many, as Trump’s victory in last year’s US Presidential election was viewed as unlikely. Trump defied the odds and won despite every major poll projecting an easy win for Hillary Clinton. Still, the result has left many Americans questioning the role of the country’s electoral college versus the significance of the popular vote, which Hillary won by nearly 3 million votes. The result was compared to Britain’s recent vote to exit the European Union (EU).

And while the result continues to cause concern for many living in America because of statements made by Trump leading up to his election, the international community has anxiously anticipated the inauguration. Many are waiting to see if Trump’s decisions as president live up to the often inflammatory rhetoric he used as a candidate leading up to the election.

Little is known of Trump’s stance on varying issues and policies but because America’s policies often impact countries like Belize and others in the region. A new US ambassador to Belize is also to be appointed soon. For the most part, it is expected that diplomatic relations between Belize and the US will carry on as normal. It is not clear, however, how the Trump administration will approach matters of grave concern to the region, such as “de-risking” for instance.

Belize has been hit the hardest by the effects of de-risking in the region. The issue was even brought to the attention of outgoing President Barack Obama by regional leaders at the last Summit of the Americas. At the time, Obama had promised to review the situation and see what help the US could offer, however, no significant progress has been made in limiting the effects of de-risking. It is anybody’s guess as to whether or not the Trump administration will view the issue with any more urgency than the previous administration.
