By BBN Staff: According to the Prensa Libre, a Guatemalan newspaper, yesterday a judge ordered the detention of President Jimmy Morales’ son and brother for fraud.
A United Nations anti-graft commission said they are suspected of submitting about $23,000 worth of false receipts in an alleged tax fraud.
They were both charged yesterday with the crime of fraud and were ordered to serve pretrial detention while prosecutors continue to investigate.
Sammy Morales, (brother of Jimmy) was arrested at the disposition of a judge after presenting himself to prosecutors and Jose Manuel Morales, son of Jimmy appeared voluntarily for questioning.
The father of Jose Manuel’s ex girlfriend will also be charged for fraud and not money laundering.
President Jimmy Morales posted on his official twitter page: “The rule of law must prevail above all things.”
Guatemalan prosecutors backed by the U.N. commission have brought a string of anti-corruption cases, most notably against former President of Guatemala Otto Perez Molina.
