Tuesday, June 23, 2015. By: Wellington C. Ramos: In 2011, I did a tour of the Stann Creek West constituency before Melvin Hulse was defeated by Honorable Rodwell Ferguson, to inquire about what would happen in the elections that were coming up. Most of the Garifuna people told me that they will vote against him because he is a racist and do not like them. I also went to Placencia village and I had a conversation with a Creole family and they told me that they were not going to vote for him because of the same reason.
They also said that when the UDP are in power, he wants to be the Minister to control all the UDP Representatives in the south. In addition, residents say he was always meddling into the affairs of his colleagues’ constituencies.
Before I left Belize I made it my business to stop in Belmopan to see a UDP Minister who is my friend. I told him that his party is not looking good in the south and that they should consider getting better candidates for the upcoming elections in 2012 especially to replace Melvin Hulse. He said to me that Melvin Hulse told him that he will beat Ferguson badly. I said to him; “I do not think so”.
I left with the impression that they believed all the garbage Melvin Hulse was selling them. When the elections were held in 2012, the UDP lost all their seats in the south. One of the major complaints was that he had his office in Dangriga Town, even though he represented the people in the villages. They had to travel to the town to see him. He also works hard for the Zabaneh Family who are mostly PUP supporters and that in itself is committing political suicide.
Now, he is making these serious allegations against his party leader Dean Barrow, who have been patient with him for all these years. Everything that I am saying here the party leader should be aware of because these are ongoing complaints that have been made against him for years now. The party leader has the authority to file a complaint with the UDP Executive Committee, to bring about a disciplinary hearing against this Standard Bearer and he should do it. The purpose of the complaint is to conduct a hearing to determine what his motive for doing what he did was. Obviously, it is clear that his intentions were malicious in nature to damage his party leader and the party.
The Prime Minister’s responsibility is to do whatever he can to have his party remain in power and to help build on his majority to get his agenda through the House of Representatives. Why would any Representative from his party be against such a supportive leader? It is puzzling to me. Instead of questioning his Prime Minister’s motive, he should be happy and supportive of his actions. He has not been elected yet and he is behaving as if he is elected.
Imagine, what will happen if he was to be elected again? I am convinced that he will not change his attitude. With that said and like what the former Prime Minister Said Musa is implying, he is not fit to be a candidate for his party no more. He has lost all faith trust and confidence of his party members and the Prime Minister. Even if he apologizes, that will not repair the damage that has been done because of the tolerance they had for him over the years. I will be waiting to see the developments in the next few weeks. The UDP will await the conclusion of the By-Election in Dangriga Town and Melvin Hulse will be the next item on their agenda because many UDP are tired of his behavior and have had enough of him.
