Friday, June 26, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: The Belize National Coast Guard has reported what it calls a “soft grounding” of a Mexican naval vessel just south of Blackadore Caye in the Belize District.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which received its report from Commandant of the Guard Rear Admiral John Borland, the Polaris Intercepter which measures 55 feet landed on the mud flats and shoals near the caye, which is owned by American actor Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio is planning a special wellness resort and conservation area for the island.
The Ministry says Mexican vessels go south customarily from their base in Chetumal Bay, as permitted by the Government, to access the southern outpost of Xcalac.
The Coast Guard has responded from their forward operating base at San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye, immediately east of the island, and are cooperating with the Mexican Navy, Port Authority, Department of the Environment and Fisheries Department to assess the impact of grounding.
Belize’s and Mexico’s officials are negotiating a Memorandum of Understanding on Innocent Passage to formalize such Mexican Navy transit arrangements through our maritime spaces in accordance with Contemporary International Law and Practice.
